# MTG Online Backend Architecture Simplification - Final Summary
## Overview
The MTG Online backend has been successfully simplified from a fragmented architecture with 54+ files to a clean, consolidated structure with 37 Python files. This simplification eliminated duplicate code, removed unused services, and created a unified database layer.
## Before vs After
### Before Simplification
- **54+ Python files** in the app directory
- Multiple duplicate router files (auth.py, users.py, decks.py, card_router.py, interactions.py, user_data.py, rooms.py, games/router.py, refresh.py, card_import.py, ws.py)
- Duplicate core files (logging_config.py, settings.py)
- Unused services (card_mirror_service.py, mtgjson_loader.py, mtgjson_uploader.py)
- Unused schemas (proto_messages.py, protocol_constants.py)
- Fragmented model files (10+ separate model files)
- Dual database configuration (mtg_engine, mirror_engine)
### After Simplification
- **37 Python files** in the app directory
- **45 total Python files** (including __init__.py files and subdirectories)
- Single unified router structure
- Consolidated core configuration
- Unified database layer (single engine)
- Consolidated models (2 main files: models.py, mtg_models.py)
- Clean service layer

## Key Changes
### 1. Unified Database Layer
- **Before**: Dual database configuration (mtg_engine, mirror_engine, mtg_get_db, mirror_get_db)
- **After**: Single unified engine with automatic dialect detection (SQLite/PostgreSQL)
- **Backward Compatibility**: Aliases provided for old imports (mtg_engine → engine, etc.)
### 2. Consolidated Models
- **Before**: 10+ separate model files (user_deck.py, user_data.py, card_import_batch.py, etc.)
- **After**: 2 main files
- `models.py`: 45+ application models (User, DecklistFile, UserDeck, CardImportBatch, etc.)
- `mtg_models.py`: MTG card data models (MtgSet, MtgCard, MtgCardMirror, DeckCardLink)
### 3. Simplified Routers
- **Before**: 11+ duplicate/fragmented router files
- **After**: 6 main routers
- `auth_router.py`: Authentication endpoints
- `users_router.py`: User management
- `cards_router.py`: Card search and interactions (combined card search + interactions)
- `decks_router.py`: Deck management (CRUD, cards, precedents, suggestions)
- `games_router.py`: Game management
- `admin.py`: Admin endpoints
### 4. Clean Service Layer
- **Before**: Services scattered across multiple files with duplicate functionality
- **After**: 11 focused service files
- `deck_manager.py`: Deck CRUD operations
- `card_search_service.py`: Card search with filters
- `deck_suggestion_service.py`: Deck card suggestions
- `import_batch_processor.py`: Card import processing
- `fuzzy_card_matcher.py`: Fuzzy matching logic
- `file_parser.py`: File parsing (XLSX, CSV, JSON, ODS)
- `deck_parser.py`: Deck file parsing
- `card_database.py`: Card database operations
- `game_server.py`: Game server logic
- `mtgjson_downloader.py`: MTGJSON data download
- `mtgjson_manager.py`: MTGJSON data management
### 5. Configuration Management
- **Before**: Duplicate settings files (settings.py, logging_config.py)
- **After**: Single `config.py` with sensible defaults
- SQLite by default for development
- PostgreSQL supported via DATABASE_URL environment variable
- All configuration via environment variables
## How to Run
### Development (SQLite)
```bash
cd /home/wall-o/projects/mtgonline/backend
# Activate virtual environment
source venv/bin/activate
# Run the application
python run.py
```
The server will:
1. Initialize the database (create tables if needed)
2. Start on http://0.0.0.0:8000
3. API docs available at http://0.0.0.0:8000/docs
### Production (PostgreSQL)
```bash
# Set environment variables
export DATABASE_URL=postgresql+asyncpg://user:password@host:5432/database
export SECRET_KEY=your-secure-secret-key
# Run without hot reload
python run.py
```
Or modify `.env` file:
```bash
DATABASE_URL=postgresql+asyncpg://user:password@host:5432/database
```
## Database Configuration
### Default (SQLite)
- **URL**: `sqlite+aiosqlite:///./mtgonline.db`
- **File**: `mtgonline.db` in project root
- **Use Case**: Development and testing
### PostgreSQL
- **URL**: `postgresql+asyncpg://user:password@host:5432/database`
- **Use Case**: Production
- **Configuration**: Set via environment variable or .env file
### Database Initialization
```python
from app.core.database import create_tables
import asyncio
asyncio.run(create_tables())
```

## Testing Results
### ✅ App Import
```bash
python3 -c "from app.main import app; print('✅ App imported successfully')"
```
**Result**: SUCCESS - All imports resolved correctly
### ✅ File Count Verification
```bash
find app -type f -name "*.py" | grep -v __pycache__ | grep -v __backup__ | wc -l
```
**Result**: 45 Python files (including __init__.py files)
### ⚠️ Database Initialization
**Issue**: Environment variable `DATABASE_URL` is set to PostgreSQL, overriding .env file
**Status**: Not tested (requires PostgreSQL connection or environment variable fix)
**Workaround**:
```bash
unset DATABASE_URL
DATABASE_URL=sqlite+aiosqlite:///./mtgonline.db python3 -c "..."
```
### ✅ Server Startup Script
**Status**: Created and ready to use
**Command**: `python run.py`
**Expected**: Initialize SQLite database and start server on port 8000
